Meet Marwan Barghouti. He is, according to the New York Times, a “Palestinian leader and parliamentarian.” And by that I mean, he’s a convicted murderer. He’s been imprisoned in Israel for the last 15 years. You know. Because he’s a terrorist. But listen, he’s outraged at how he’s been treated and decided there’s nothing else to do but go on a hunger strike.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. How on earth do you know this? Because the New York Times gave this terrorist parliamentarian a platform to whine about his “unfair treatment.”
HADARIM PRISON, Israel — Having spent the last 15 years in an Israeli prison, I have been both a witness to and a victim of Israel’s illegal system of mass arbitrary arrests and ill-treatment of Palestinian prisoners. After exhausting all other options, I decided there was no choice but to resist these abuses by going on a hunger strike.
Some 1,000 Palestinian prisoners have decided to take part in this hunger strike, which begins today, the day we observe here as Prisoners’ Day. Hunger striking is the most peaceful form of resistance available. It inflicts pain solely on those who participate and on their loved ones, in the hopes that their empty stomachs and their sacrifice will help the message resonate beyond the confines of their dark cells.

OH YEAH! Sorry about that! It totally must’ve slipped their minds, Barghouti being a MURDERER AND TERRORIST and all. NYT couldn’t bring that up in the beginning. After all, that might’ve compromised your ability to feel bad for him.
Moving on.
Israeli’s heard about the poor, poor Palestinian prisoners’ hunger strike and decided to troll them by holding a BBQ. They hoped it would “break the spirit” of the strikers. If anything could break a hunger strike, that’d be it– the delicious smell of meat.
The youth branch and secretary-general of the far-right party, which has two representatives in Bayit Yehudi, Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel and MK Bezalel Smotrich, set up grills outside the Ofer Prison to “celebrate the hunger strike” and “break the spirit” of the strikers, in hopes that the smell of the meat would waft into the prison.
The prisoners “will enjoy breathing in the smoke and suffer from the smell of the meat, and [we will] show them that we will not give in to their whims,” the group said.
Hardcore.
“The time has come to stop listening to the hunger strikers and show them that we won’t surrender to their whims… I call on the government and its leader to worsen the terrorists’ conditions and act with full force to release the soldiers [Hadar] Goldin and [Oron] Shaul, of blessed memory, who fought for all of us,” National Union Secretary-General Ofir Sofer said, according to the Jerusalem Post.
The National Union Youth chairman Avihai Greenwald didn’t mince words either.
“Surrender to a hunger strike?… Anyway, it’s not clear why there’s no death penalty for terrorists. We wish these terrorists luck in their hunger strike. They should take it all the way.”
