The bad news is that she sounds like that’s actually a bad thing.
According to this, ‘Girls’ writer Jenni Konner (and one of Lena Dunham’s BFFs; that ought to tell you something) wanted to write an abortion storyline in the very first episode of the show when it was brand new. Something about it being on HBO and being OMG SUPER EDGY.
But producer Judd Apatow advised her and the other writers against going that far, saying that their general audience probably wouldn’t be too keen on the show pushing such a controversial subject before getting to know the characters and the setting –
Konner revealed that the first episode of “Girls” was supposed to contain an abortion storyline, but the show’s executive producer, Judd Apatow, quashed the idea because it would be too jarring for viewers.
“Judd was like: ‘Don’t lead with it, like you don’t know these characters,” Konner told Alison Rosen in the most recent episode of her podcast. “You can do any story you want once you know the characters.”
Apatow told Konner that a character having an abortion in the pilot episode of “Girls” would be like “having Kramer (of “Seinfeld”) hold up a puppy and shoot it in the head in the first episode.”“He was right,” she said. “That wasn’t the first episode to do.”
(Don’t know about you, but given that this is Lena Dunham’s TV show, even after getting to know these disgusting characters, I still wouldn’t want a “controversial” storyline.)
The takeaway in this is that pro-abortion feminists do realize that treating abortion like it’s no big deal is off-putting for a lot of people. Clearly, they want to change all that and make it more acceptable, which is why pro-lifers can never let up on this issue.
Abortion isn’t good for the first episode and it certainly isn’t good for the 100th episode.
