Holy mother of weird.
Georgina Girasoli, 31, gave birth to her baby, Leo, six weeks ago. She claims she hasn’t suffered from postnatal depression because she consumed her placenta in a delicious fruit smoothie. I’m not kidding.
‘I read that around three days after birth there is a surge of hormones which can make the mother become very emotional and sometimes lead to post natal depression,’ she explains.
‘Eating the placenta is supposed to replace those hormones as well as added vitamins and minerals that have been supporting the baby for the last nine months.
‘I felt that it was worth trying, even though there is little medical evidence to support the theory.’
Uhm. I don’t know about you, but I would need evidence. Cold, hard evidence. And even then, not gonna happen.
‘I agree it sounds disgusting and I couldn’t bring myself to eat it raw or cooked like a steak – so my husband mixed it into fruit smoothies for me,’ she says.
‘I had two smoothies on day two and two smoothies on day three. Carlos even tried it himself out of curiosity.
Brb, gagging.
‘I’m pleased to say I didn’t experience the day three “baby blues” or post natal depression. I can’t say for sure this was due to eating the placenta, but I still feel it was worth doing just in case and will definitely do it next time.’
So there you go, mommies to be. Bottoms up.
