Please imagine me reading the title of this post to you making MEGA AIR QUOTES with my fingers. Because this story is just RIDICULOUS.
According to that sourcelink, the rapper and "performance artist" (yup – more airquotes) pictured above is named Mykki Blanco. He (and I call him "he" because he is currently using male pronouns, but you should know that I'd call him "he" even if he were using female pronouns, because I have NO PATIENCE for people who claim to be "multi-gendered") has just recently written on Facebook that he has been HIV positive since 2011.
Why should we care about this? Well, unless you're a huge Mykki Blanco fan, you really shouldn't, except for the fact that the Daily Dot, which is the sourcelink for this post, screamed in its headline:
It's now apparently "courageous" to announce to everyone that you are HIV positive, you guys. Here's his post:

This is what counts as "courageous" these days. Alerting the world you're gay (see Michael Sam or Jason Collins). Alerting the world you're really a woman (see Bruce Jenner). Alerting the world that you've got a sexually transmitted disease.
Courageous.
Seriously?
That word (along with the word "brave") is being used far too often to describe the sexual habits of others. Or to describe people who are deviant in some way.
Just as a reminder, here are some Actual Examples of courage and bravery. When you hold up Mykki Blanco's stupid FB post up beside the ones in this link, it's a pretty stark contrast, wouldn't you say?
Look – perhaps he got a load off his chest by announcing on social media that he's HIV positive. Good for him, I guess. But the appropriate reaction to this news by anyone who cares about Mykki Blanco is, "Oh man – that sucks – if there's anything I can do, let me know. I appreciate you sharing your news with me." Not, "OMG SO COURAGEOUS AND BRAVE."
The appropriate reaction to this news by anyone who DOESN'T care about Mykki Blanco is "Who's Mykki Blanco?"
