Apparently, last night was Earth Hour. Or something. And a bunch of people shut off lights and did Zumba with glow sticks on (and I'm not going to lie, I think Mock would've liked that) and they all dimmed or shut off their lights to bring awareness to global climate change. It was organized by the conservation group, WWF. It began in Sydney, but it apparently went viral and now other countries around the world – other cities – are taking part. Over 170 countries and "more than 1200 landmarks," to be exact. All you have to do is shut down the power at 8:30 pm local time for an hour and that's supposed to "highlight the plight of the planet."
The Empire State Building dimmed its lights and the Eiffel Tower went dark as iconic landmarks across the world observed Earth Hour, the global climate change awareness campaign.
The usually glittering nighttime majesty of the Empire State Building was set to "faint sparkle" in New York, while theaters on Broadway also toned down the neon.
…The famous Las Vegas strip went dim, with the replica Eiffel Tower at Paris Hotel turning its lights off, along with several hotels and casinos that normally illuminate the main drag in Sin City.
Other US west coast cities marked the occasion by switching off, with the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco going dim and the normally bright gateway pylons at Los Angeles LAX airport turned off after being lit in green in honor of the occasion.
Further south in the Americas, landmarks in Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro were also lights out for the hour, shrouding parts of the cities in darkness.
Earlier in Paris, the Eiffel Tower went black for only five minutes — due to security reasons — while nearly 300 other monuments in the City of Light also switched off their lights.
Et tu, Vegas?
I cannot WAIT to hear how all of our readers celebrated Earh Hour. I'm sure I had WAAAAAY too many personal appliances going at once in my home at once, in addition to not knowing or caring about Earth hour until this morning (after the fact) because I'm one of those people who doesn't believe that climate change is caused by humans. I believe it's this thing called weather. And I certainly don't think that politicans can legislate weather.
