His invention is used in one out of every three homes in America and he says he regrets inventing it.
John Sylvan is the creator of the Keurig instant coffee brewing system that most anyone who drinks coffee uses pretty regularly. But now he's saying that he wishes he never invented it because the plastic pods are impossible to recycle –
The design is simple – a small plastic capsule containing ground beans that can be put into a machine to produce a cup of coffee at the touch of a button. However despite the […] success of the company nothing has been done to try and make the packaging of the popular Keurig pods recyclable. And Mr. Sylvan insists this will never happen.'No matter what they say about recycling, those things will never be recyclable,' he said.
'The plastic is a specialized plastic made of four different layers.'
Environmentalists have been trying to discourage people from using the coffee pods because of the negative impact on the environment – but unlike some of their more recent crusades to save Mother Nature, this video produced by environmentalist groups is actually kind of funny –
As humorous as it is to imagine a giant Godzilla monster made of tiny plastic coffee pods attacking the urban masses of coffee drinkers, I don't think it's that big of a deal. If you want to brew instant coffee yourself, you should! If you'd rather let Starbucks (or whoever) brew it for you, that's your prerogative. If you want to give up coffee for the environment and get your caffeine fix from Pepsi or Coke, there's no one stopping you. Do what you want to do, and let other people do what they want to do.
Me? I'm a Dr. Pepper kind of girl.
