Pro tip for all the politicians out there: Always be cognizant of microphones. ALWAYS.
During a town hall event in Mesa Friday, Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake failed to do that.
After the main town hall discussion, Flake stepped off the stage, and Mesa Mayor John Giles walked over to chat. (I’m sure you can see where this is going.) Flake apparently forgot that he was still wearing a microphone and was heard saying, “…if we become the party of Roy Moore and Donald Trump, we are toast.” (Even though it was a muted mic, the audio feed continued to roll to the cameras.)
Seriously dude? If you want to get technical, Donald Trump– who ran as a Republican– is POTUS. He’s kinda, sorta a big party leader right now.
That’s when Giles jumped in and called Trump an idiot.
“And I am not throwing smoke at you, but you are the guy,” Giles said. “Just for fun, think about how much fun it would be, just to be the foil, you know, and point out what an idiot this guy [Trump] is.”
At that point, someone pointed to Flake’s mic, and it caught him off guard. This was the moment someone told him. I grabbed a screenshot for your viewing pleasure:
Telling expression, huh?
Here’s the full clip:
Flake isn’t seeking reelection, so it’s not like these remarks will hurt him in that way. He’s flakin’ out.
