July 13, 2022I’m not a Thor movie buff. I mean, I’m as happy to look at Chris Hemsworth as the next straight woman, but I’m just not into the superhero movies, so I haven’t seen the Thor from five years ago, and I haven’t seen any Thors before that (if in fact there were previous Thors), and I haven’t seen the latest Thor. But apparently, the latest Thor is triggering some folks, because Natalie Portman’s character gets chemotherapy in it.
Again, I haven’t seen it, so I can’t give you details on what the traumatic scene of chemo is like. All I can tell you is that Natalie’s character has stage four cancer, is ill throughout the film, and in one scene, she gets chemo.
Because of this, according to the sourcelink, some fans are demanding that trigger warnings be placed at the beginning of the film because the chemo scene is “upsetting.”
Let me just say that again. People are demanding some sort of announcement or screentitle at the beginning of the movie that warns people that the film contains scenes of chemo which might be upsetting to some viewers.
CHEMOTHERAPY.
It just doesn’t get much dumber than this, y’all.
The people calling for the trigger warnings are suggesting that people who have experience with cancer, not just those who’ve HAD CHEMO mind you, might be disturbed by the content.
Meanwhile, there are hip hop videos depicting all kinds of violence, there are videos from Cardi B simulating sex – and no one is demanding trigger warnings for them. But chemo? OMG HIDE YO KIDS HIDE YO WIVES. CLUTCH ALL THE PEARLS.
A few choice complaints include these:
“No spoilers, but Thor: Love and Thunder SHOULD have had a trigger warning for graphic depiction of cancer and the fact that we didn’t know going in is atrocious.“
“Cancer is way too common a trigger and when they show it that graphically with that much imagery and dwelling on it and talking about it that much…you need to be warned especially for a Marvel movie which people go to for escapism. And shouldn’t have to read the comics.“
“Been through treatment twice and I’ve got such bad PTSD from it. I’m glad I knew the plot so I can skip it!”
“Thor really needs a trigger warning for us cancer patients even though I knew the story I wonder if others do.”
Thankfully, there were plenty of normal, rational, thinking regular humans out there who thought demands for a trigger warning were absurd. Also, imagine being a person who bought a ticket to see Thor in the theater, sitting down with your bucket o’ popcorn and Junior Mints, and then seeing a trigger warning that says, “Scenes of chemo depicted” and then WALKING OUT OF THE THEATER because of the warning. Like – do those kind of people actually exist????
Our country is getting so soft and weak, and it’s no wonder given who’s in charge right now. He’s literally the poster child for weakness and fragility.
Incidentally, can we get a trigger warning on POTUS? He’s way more upsetting than any movie scene.

Really?!? Clearly these people are not Actual Cancer Survivors. None of the Actual Cancer Survivors I know are so weak of constitution as to become undone by a depiction of someone having chemotherapy. We have faced down cancer and kicked its ass to the curb. I was lucky I didn’t have to have chemo to get rid of my cancer—but once you have faced cancer, fought and won, well—you don’t wilt over something depicted in a movie. There’s also the whole issue of being to tell fact from fiction and story from real life, but that’s another discussion.
