MAN is this primary race getting ugly.
I mean, we all knew it would. But I kinda figured the fights would be mostly between Trump and whoever he slapped his latest “disloyal” label on.
But a fight between Dave Rubin (who we adore and have had on our show before – see here and here), and Vivek Ramaswamy (who Daisy and I interviewed at CPAC)? Well, THAT I did not see coming.
But alas, it’s happening. It started with Vivek using some rather harsh language towards Gov DeSantis. BEHOLD:
.@RonDeSantis signed a hate speech bill earlier this year at his donors’ request. I respectfully disagree: the right answer to bad speech isn’t less speech. It’s more speech. That’s the American way. pic.twitter.com/4Faq3zUAdk

A “hate speech bill?” Come on, now.
Dave wasn’t having it.
Dave, it’s absolutely true & we need to respectfully be able to have legitimate policy debates without taking it personally. The FL law prohibits people from distributing certain kinds of literature. but not others. That’s absolutely a hate speech law.https://t.co/xGzC5z0tge

It got more heated.
You’re being intentionally obtuse. Here’s what’s in the bill. It isn’t stopping anyone from speaking.

I’ll check for the non-existent case on the way to the Supreme Court… pic.twitter.com/mtnRahcVtt
It’s about property rights, targeted harassment and religious liberty.

He knows that, but he’s doing Trump’s dirty work.
There’s nothing about “certain kinds of literature.” You can’t target people at their home or place of worship.
What’s the deal you cut with Trump, Vivek? pic.twitter.com/NZnV9Uk15W
Yiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiikes.
How about you first answer the simple question that everyone is asking you over and over since you are Mr. Truth: Have you talked to Trump?
— Dave Rubin (@RubinReport) June 6, 2023
Also please share with the world the exact leaflets which can’t be distributed in Florida on private property. Be specific.
I keep asking…

Ben Domenech entered the chat.

And that’s pretty much where we are right now.
I’m not a lawyer, and I haven’t read the full bill in question. But it does seem that from the excerpts included in Rubin’s messages above, that this is more a property rights issue versus an issue of “hate speech.”
Now, I have no idea if Vivek has some sort of deal going with Trump to go full attack-dog on DeSantis, but with politics being the way it is today? I suppose anything is possible. It’d have to be a deal that doesn’t involve money though – because Vivek has plenty of that already – probably more than Trump. And interestingly, Vivek is, at least so far, steering completely clear of criticizing Trump, preferring instead to set his sights completely and only on DeSantis.
Thoughts?

I just read the law (7 pages, double space, large font), Dave is 100% right.
Vivek is probably right. We all know how the left will interpret anything as “harassment” and “hate speech”. Generally, more laws limiting speech is usually bad. The Kanye example proves the point. He may be targeting that speech, (Even gross speech should be protected) but someone distributing “Jesus loves you” would be defined as hateful by a leftist and agreed to by an activist Judge. Just leave speech alone.
So basically Florida has basically become a both parties consent state and he is deliberately misinterpreting this as muh hate speech?
I don’t think he’s doing this to benefit Trump but to try to take out DeSantis while he’s still somewhat weak.
