We’re still doing this? We’re still getting mad about sports teams names? We’re THIS FREAKIN CHILDISH still?
Gawd.
According to the sourcelink, George Washington University took a survey of its 7300 students to see if they were offended by their sports team(s) name – the Colonials. 44 percent of the students said they’d like to get rid of the name, and 43 percent said that the 86 year old name should stay.
In other words, it was basically a tie.
So what did GWU do? Well, they decided the name has to go, of course. We can’t have people potentially offended by a sports team name, now can we? The university announced the change because the “Colonials” name “can no longer serve its purpose as a name that unifies.”
There was a whole special committee formed to study this issue, you guys. This is what universities are now busying themselves with. The president of the university said that their “research” made this decision a given. He said, “‘As we embark on our third century, we must continue to lead with our values, strengths and the diversity of the George Washington University community. While some may disagree with the outcome, this process has determined that changing the moniker is the right decision for our university.”
If you’re wondering what the new name is, join the club! They don’t know yet. The whole situation is complicated by the fact that their own medical facility is called Colonial Health Center. Students use what’s called “Colonial Cash” to pay for meals and laundry.
Can you imagine the cost associated with such a name change? What a freaking waste.
